What is the RUT?
The RUT (Rol Único Tributario) is a unique number that identifies all natural persons and legal entities in Chile before the Internal Revenue Service (SII). It is the main tax identifier of the country.
RUT Structure:
- Body: Unique number assigned sequentially (usually 7-8 digits)
- Check Digit (DV): Number from 0 to 9 or the letter K, calculated using Modulo 11
- Separator: Hyphen (-) separating the body from the check digit
Validation Algorithm (Modulo 11):
- Multiply each digit of the body by a factor (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 2...)
- Sum all the products
- Calculate modulo 11 of the sum
- Subtract the result from 11
- If the result is 11 → digit = 0
- If the result is 10 → digit = K
- In other cases → digit = result

Sum all the products
Calculate modulo 11 of the sum
