mod-97 Validation Algorithm

The IBAN uses a validation algorithm called mod-97 to ensure the code is correct:

  • Move the first 4 characters (country code + control) to the end of the IBAN

  • Convert all letters to numbers (A=10, B=11, ..., Z=35)

  • Divide the resulting number by 97

  • The remainder must be 1 for the IBAN to be valid

  • The check digit is calculated as (98 - remainder)
